What is the conversion factor between nanometers and micrometers?

A conversion factor is used to change the units of a measured quantity without changing its value. It represents the ratio (or fraction) that expresses the relationship between two different units. A conversion factor is always equal to 1.

The relationship between nanometers and micrometers is 1000, such as:

Which is bigger, a nanometer or a micrometer?

When it comes to measurements, there can be some confusion over which is bigger, a nanometer or an micrometer. To find out which one is larger, we must first convert one unit to the other and then compare them.

1 nm = 11000 μm = 0.001 μm
0.001 micrometer is smaller than 1 micrometer.
1 nanometer is, therefore, smaller than 1 micrometer.
To be more specific, a micrometer is 1000 times bigger than a nanometer.

How to convert nanometers to micrometers?

Multiplying any value by 1 will get you the same value back. You can do that one time or multiple times.

For example:

84 x 1 = 84
438 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 438

Multiplying by 1 is the first step in any unit conversion problem. The second step is to replace the number 1 with the conversion factor that is also equal to 1.

For example, if we want to convert 1 nanometers into micrometers we multiply 1 nm by the conversion factor of 1 μm1000 nm

1 nm = 1 nm x 1 = 1 nm x 1 μm1000 nm = 0.001 μm

By replacing the number 1 with the conversion factor, nanometers are canceled out and we get the result in micrometers. And since the conversion factor is equal to 1, multiplying it with the original value won't change its magnitude and will only change its unit.

Based on this, we can conclude that 1 nanometers are equal to 0.001 micrometers.
